I think I speak for a lot of people who regularly study in the 24 hr room when I say it would be great if you did away with the alarm on the door of the grad lounge. Requiring a graduate i.d. to open the door is more than effective at preventing undergrads from entering the lounge. After all, our dorm doors don’t have alarms in addition to the key card access. The alarm is loud and unnecessary, and never ceases to interrupt the concentration of every student in the study room. I hope you take it into consideration, thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. It is a little trickier than you might imagine because of fire code issues. Two means of egress are needed in a room this size so you have to be able to get out that door in an emergency even without an ID. The alarm is a deterrent (because it is so unpleasant!). You don’t need an alarm at your dorm because you are going into the building, not getting out. You wouldn’t run INTO a burning building but you would run out. We realize it is not an ideal situation. We’ll keep brainstorming.

I’m not sure if the maintenance people are aware they disturb students in the 7th floor stairwells. Almost every day there are several members of the maintenance crew lounging and chatting in the 7th floor stairwells disturbing the students. I’m sure they are on their break and just want to sit down, but they do not adhere to the silence of the 7th floor and it is disturbing to the students. I don’t mean to rat them out, but this is a sort of a hidden quiet spot in an always crowded library that I would like to see preserved.

Thank you for this information. We will investigate and take action.

The Reference Department is on the 4th floor of the Wilson Wing, behind the giant "Ask" sign over the stairs in the atrium. There are signs that should help you once you get in the building. We note your comments about the website. Our web team is in the midst of interviewing students and faculty about the usability of the site and your feedback will help inform that process.
