Alarm on the Graduate Lounge Door

Thursday, October 29, 2009 11:23 pm

I think I speak for a lot of people who regularly study in the 24 hr room when I say it would be great if you did away with the alarm on the door of the grad lounge. Requiring a graduate i.d. to open the door is more than effective at preventing undergrads from entering the lounge. After all, our dorm doors don’t have alarms in addition to the key card access. The alarm is loud and unnecessary, and never ceases to interrupt the concentration of every student in the study room. I hope you take it into consideration, thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. It is a little trickier than you might imagine because of fire code issues. Two means of egress are needed in a room this size so you have to be able to get out that door in an emergency even without an ID. The alarm is a deterrent (because it is so unpleasant!). You don’t need an alarm at your dorm because you are going into the building, not getting out. You wouldn’t run INTO a burning building but you would run out. We realize it is not an ideal situation. We’ll keep brainstorming.

Library brochures

Saturday, April 25, 2009 1:46 pm

Hello, I am from Hunter Library at Western Carolina University, and we are gathering samples to get ideas for redoing our library brochures. Do you produce any type of printed brochures or handouts about your libraries? If so, would you be willing to mail a sample copy to us? We also want to collect samples of maps (or floor plans) that you may print up to help patrons find their way to various collections, if you would be willing to mail that also. Thank you for you help and assistance! It is greatly appreciated! You can send the information to: Christy McCarley Hunter Library 176 Central Drive Western Carolina Univeristy Cullowhee, NC 28723

Sure, we’ll be happy to.

I want to thank the Library for adding the New Books @ ZSR and New Films @ ZSR to its website. This (along with many other changes to the website) shows your staff's great commitment to "customer" service.

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. We do try!

Cold in the Library

Monday, March 30, 2009 1:12 pm

Is there any way to turn the temperature up even a few degrees? It is always much colder in the library than any other place on campus.

We wish we had more control over the temperature in the library, as it is often variable. We will call in your complaint to Facilities.

Not sure exactly what you mean by greatest idea - Wake the Library? Graffiti wall? Whatever, glad you like it!

Air Fresheners

Saturday, November 8, 2008 7:59 pm

Please remove the plug-in air fresheners from the computer room. This is my second year at Wake, and I spent the first half of this semester wondering why the computer lab smelled so bad this year. I finally figured it out! Many people are sensitive to air “fresheners” and other perfumed products, which can exacerbate asthma. I recognize that last year the lab smelled like a locker room, not pleasant, but if the problem is moldy carpet or other dampness issues, you are not making it better with air fresheners. Mold is also dangerous to health, and covering it up with air fresheners just increases the risk that students’ health is being compromised. If there is a problem with the carpet, pull it up and put down a tile or wood floor.

The air fresheners have been removed.

1) In addition to having a "cash to deacon card" machine near the circulation desk, I think we should have one in the Cafe 24 Hour Room. This way, people can easily put money on their card if the machines need exact change or if they need to pay for prints.

2) I don't know if the library already supplies this service, but I think they should rent out headphones for free. People should be able to borrow a pair of headphones, in exchange for their deacon card and when they return their headphones, they'll get their card back. If this system is already in place, it should be better advertised. People should be able to rent them out from the circulation desk.

It would be nice to have a second "cash to Deacon card" machine in the library, but the cost is prohibitive. They are expensive to own and operate!

We do circulate headphones from the circulation desk. Here is the policy from the Access Dept. web page:

"We circulate headphones for 2 hours at a time to enable students who want to watch DVDs in the library on their laptops."

You may be right that we need to advertise this service more. Thanks for the suggestion.

We want to hear from you!
