Alarm on the Graduate Lounge Door

Thursday, October 29, 2009 11:23 pm

I think I speak for a lot of people who regularly study in the 24 hr room when I say it would be great if you did away with the alarm on the door of the grad lounge. Requiring a graduate i.d. to open the door is more than effective at preventing undergrads from entering the lounge. After all, our dorm doors don’t have alarms in addition to the key card access. The alarm is loud and unnecessary, and never ceases to interrupt the concentration of every student in the study room. I hope you take it into consideration, thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. It is a little trickier than you might imagine because of fire code issues. Two means of egress are needed in a room this size so you have to be able to get out that door in an emergency even without an ID. The alarm is a deterrent (because it is so unpleasant!). You don’t need an alarm at your dorm because you are going into the building, not getting out. You wouldn’t run INTO a burning building but you would run out. We realize it is not an ideal situation. We’ll keep brainstorming.

7th Floor Quiet Study

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 5:07 pm

I’m not sure if the maintenance people are aware they disturb students in the 7th floor stairwells. Almost every day there are several members of the maintenance crew lounging and chatting in the 7th floor stairwells disturbing the students. I’m sure they are on their break and just want to sit down, but they do not adhere to the silence of the 7th floor and it is disturbing to the students. I don’t mean to rat them out, but this is a sort of a hidden quiet spot in an always crowded library that I would like to see preserved.

Thank you for this information. We will investigate and take action.

TV Show Collection

Saturday, October 10, 2009 8:34 pm

I would love to see all the seasons of Cold Case in the TV show collection.

Thank you for the suggestion. We don’t really have a TV show collection. We buy television series as requested by faculty and last year were able to buy some at the end of the year with money donated by Student Government.

Outlets

Sunday, October 4, 2009 6:06 pm

The electrical outlets on the 6th floor of the Wilson Wing, along the green chairs, don’t work. Please fix them so I don’t have to move to work on my computer.

Thanks for letting us know. We will call it right in to Facilities.

I’d like to know where the Reference department is physically located but I can’t find any department information listed and searching the site gives many links but no success. Aren’t librarians supposed to be able to organize information?

The Reference Department is on the 4th floor of the Wilson Wing, behind the giant "Ask" sign over the stairs in the atrium. There are signs that should help you once you get in the building. We note your comments about the website. Our web team is in the midst of interviewing students and faculty about the usability of the site and your feedback will help inform that process.

I am working in the basement next to what looks like a closet number 152A. I just literally watched a cockroach run from under that door INTO my backpack. I’m not one to really get bothered by stuff like that but I feel like someone else might. And it was pretty disgusting.

Thanks for letting us know. We will call the exterminators. In the meantime, you might want to get out of the basement!

Library brochures

Saturday, April 25, 2009 1:46 pm

Hello, I am from Hunter Library at Western Carolina University, and we are gathering samples to get ideas for redoing our library brochures. Do you produce any type of printed brochures or handouts about your libraries? If so, would you be willing to mail a sample copy to us? We also want to collect samples of maps (or floor plans) that you may print up to help patrons find their way to various collections, if you would be willing to mail that also. Thank you for you help and assistance! It is greatly appreciated! You can send the information to: Christy McCarley Hunter Library 176 Central Drive Western Carolina Univeristy Cullowhee, NC 28723

Sure, we’ll be happy to.

We want to hear from you!
