Peabody Library Leadership Institute - quick overview

For the last four days I have been in Nashville at the Peabody Library Leadership Institute led by Patricia Brevik and Sharon Weiner. The institute has been very informative and, although there are lots of ideas rattling around I thought I would take my hour of internet access to jot down just a few:
- Library missions can/should transition from traditional library roles such as innovative systems, reference services, cataloging, etc. to university-centric roles such as curriculum integration, faculty and liaison work, and student learning assessment
- Information Literacy has the potential to fundamentally change the university curriculum if adopted as a core curriculum goal. Purdue for example has included information literacy as a core ‘pillar’ of the library mission and is working to integrate IL approaches into the university curriculum at large
- Being a librarian can/should mirror the tasks of faculty and administrators including relationship building, interdepartmental collaboration, fund raising/grant procurement, research, etc
- Systems librarians quite simply rock (ok, perhaps that hasn’t been a focus of the institute)
Tonight we are scheduled to have dinner in a fancy building at Vanderbilt and the institute wraps up tomorrow. More to come!
