Zip Linin’ and Kayak Ridin’

Sunday, June 21, 2009 10:12 pm by castsc6

Today we enjoyed another day off after a week of developing relationships and teaching healthy lifestyles with the wonderful people at the “Villa” in Chinandega. We went to Granada and took a kayaking tour around many of the islands in Lake Nicaragua (some of which are on sale starting at $50,000 if you’re interested). We then took a 45 minute Land Rover ride on the bumpiest most boulder covered “road” known to mankind (I kid you not) (and by “road” I mean a path not covered by tree growth and vegetation). Our destination was a zip lining course high among the trees and howler monkeys in the deep woods of Granada. Zip lining was a great time and a great way to experience Nicaragua’s beautiful countryside. Tonight we will sleep well and rise early for the start of a week of working in Managua’s dump.

Day 1

Today was slow and relaxing for those of us that were already in Nicaragua, waiting for the others to arrive. Jason and I did some exploring and managed to find a mini supermarket (and when I say mini, I mean mini). We did so by diving right into the culture. We conversed with three natives and were able to find our way to the mini market — a two mile walking round trip. We finished off the afternoon of waiting by swimming and playing in the pool with the Giles’s children and eating Papa John’s pizza for dinner (Nicaragua has Papa John’s…who knew).

Airports

The day of travel started off today as I woke at 3:10am to get to PTI airport in Greensboro at 5:00am. The day got stressful as we found out Nicaragua had an embargo on luggage over 50lbs…we had four bags over 50lbs…problem. The problem was resolved as we made some quick decisions, left some shoes in Greensboro and made it to the plane 5 minutes before takeoff. Our journey has been a tad more relaxed since then as we have been waiting for our 5:50pm (CST) since our arrival in Houston at 7:55pm (CST). Now, the Giles children keep me company as we await our much anticipated flight to MANAGUA, NICARAGUA!!
