Below are the five main points I would like to address if elected Speaker of the House, the final two being my biggest issues. Thank you for your time, curiosity, and consideration during this Student Government Election.
Party System
- The on-campus party system needs improvement.Greek organizations would be more willing to host on-campus parties if the regulations were reduced; this can happen if the administration continues to trust us in acting responsibly, such as during Seize the Quad. This would not only benefit the Greek organizations and eliminate the risks they face during off-campus parties, but it would benefit the entire student body as a whole as the campus would be livelier on the weekends and everyone could find an outlet for activity with relative ease.
Meal Plan
- Do you feel like the meal plan changes at random, and you never know what the swipe of your Deacon One Card is worth? That is because it has changed a lot, and those changes are not advertised well. I would like to see Aramark choose the specifics of the meal plans and keep them constant for the entire academic year.
On-Campus Parking
- The new rules for on-campus parking have not been well advertised and student tickets and lack of parking spaces are ever-increasing. I would like to see Campus Police increase the awareness of the parking rules and advertise when certain lots will be closed for special events so the parking debacle can be solved.
Faculty Advising Process
- I feel like the faculty advising process should be one of the most valued aspects of receiving a college education. Students can learn a lot and mature through their relationships with university mentors. Under the current system, many students are left with minimal interaction with their advisors and the lack of that coveted mentorship is lost. I want to work on revamping the faculty advising process by implementing departmental open houses for underclassmen in which they can engage the faculty in social atmospheres and choose the best fit for them within their prospective major.
Cabinet Website
- Student Government is an organization in which the members work to improve the quality of life for undergraduate students and address the issues that they feel are pressing. Currently, I feel a disconnect exists between students and members of the organization. I want to engage the entire student body in the Student Government process by forming a cabinet website in which students can directly affect what the organization works on. Here, students can quickly find the contact information for the leaders of each individual project and contact them with any ideas. Also, the student body will have the opportunity to request certain projects to be taken on by the organization. Finally, there can be a cabinet blog in which students can share their question, comments, and concerns with the highest members of Student Government so they will be directly addressed.
