We will be doing three screenshot assignments during the semester. One will be on the catalog, one on a database, and one on a web search. We will devote one class period to this assignment. On that day we’ll all do the catalog screenshot, and before you leave the room we’ll make sure you have full credit on that assignment. If you’d like to do the database and web search ones on that day as well, we’ll be happy to work with you on the assignment.

  • Catalog screenshot due January 29
  • Database screenshot due February 3
  • Web search screenshot due February 3

These screenshots are worth 30 total points (10 points each) of your final grade.

How to take a screenshot:

  1. Do a GOOD search. We’ll be looking at the keywords you used and using this as part of our evaluation.
  2. Click on the file -> print option
  3. Choose “Adobe PDF” as your printer, print
  4. Save to your desktop

What do you do with a screenshot:

You are using the screenshot to show us your strategy for evaluating a source. You will highlight the one best resource on the page, and cross off the ones that are clearly not right for your question. Then you will add comments to the page to let us know why you eliminated some and why you chose the one you chose. Your goal is to convince us that you picked the very best one. If you do that, you’ll get 10 points. If you just highlight one and say “it was first” or “it’s new” or “it answers my question” and turn it it with no other notation, you won’t get any points at all. We want to know that you’ve thought about all your options and that you have a rational reason, that involved a process of elimination, for the source you chose.

How to mark up the screenshot:

  1. Open the PDF file.
  2. Click on the button that looks like:
  3. Choose “Show Comment & Markup Toolbar”
  4. Here you can leave sticky notes, markup the text, and highlight things.
  5. Save the file.
  6. Email it to Kevin and Lauren.

What we are looking for in your screenshot:

  • That you had a good search strategy with a good set of keywords
  • That you picked one best resource
  • That you eliminated ones that were obviously out of date, off topic, or irrelevant
  • That you have given us several comments so that we can follow your thought processes and that we understand why you chose the one you chose. We’re assuming your thought processes are at least somewhat complex. :)
  • This is worth an entire letter grade, so we do expect that you spend a little time on this project and think about why you are choosing what you are choosing.
