In our last Speak Out gathering Lynn mentioned that she would like to bring back the “Did You Know” feature in the Library Gazette. Did you know…

I’m an NC native and habitually proselytize about barbeque (pork, of course). Because both of my parents hail from Eastern NC and I grew up here in W-S, I have divided loyalties between Eastern and Lexington styles. I own two books about NC barbeque, both of which are in our collection (Holy Smoke and North Carolina Barbeque).

After 14 years in other southern cities, I’m back in W-S and this is my third time working at ZSR: 1st, around 1984, while taking summer classes in French (and I worked with Catherine France); 2nd, around 1993/94, starting as an intern while in library school at UNC-G, and continuing as a temporary employee until I finally landed my first full-time library position. I worked for Wanda, Leslie, Linda E., and others who are still here. They all taught me useful stuff about tech services and launched my long and successful career.

My first experience with computers involved a TRS-80 from Radio Shack with programs saved to a cassette tape.

The Zephyrs were ready but not thrilled about having to brave the rain for today’s scheduled challenge, Frisbee Golf on Davis Field. We were puzzled to recieve an email this morning saying that the scheduled games were off due to the inclement weather and we were to report to Reynolds Gym at noon instead.

Not knowing what to expect, Prentis, Travis, Erik, Susan, Heather, Carolyn and Mary Beth walked over to the gym and, after trading a few barbs with opposing team mates, descended to The Six weight room where we were given the rules to the new game. We had to pick three team mates, who each would be doing one physical challenge while the rest of the team answered trivia questions. If the team completed the trivia questions without the team mate tiring and giving up, we could earn points for every question we got right. If the team mate got too tired while we debated the answer to the questions, we couldn’t answer any more questions in that round. We bemoaned the fact that our Quiz Bowl champs weren’t on the Olympic team today!

The first challenge was a “wall sit”, and was admirably completed by Erik. He had to lean on the wall, with his thighs parallel to the floor, while we answered the 6 questions on fitness and nutrition. I don’t think he even broke a sweat. The next challenge was dispatched handily by Travis who maintained a “plank” position, (anyone who’s done this in yoga knows it’s not easy) while we answered another set of questions. In the final challenge, Prentis did “crunches” while we answered the last 6 questions. Luckily, between us, we knew enough nutrition, fitness, biology and etymology to eek out a first place win. And the three gentlemen in the group managed to maintain poise and style, while utilizing skill, (not luck) and demonstrating their physical prowess.

Next week, Susan, Erik, Heather and Carolyn are ready to go head to head with other teams in the Water Polo Basketball Rematch. Come on out and watch!

Starbucks became even more popular than usual on Thursday as the staff with offices in the Wilson Wing of ZSR chose to relocate there due to the power outage resulting from the damaged main transformer for the Wilson WIng. Power outlets were at a premium and power strips became a hot commodity! The study rooms behind Starbucks were put to good use as well!

In addition to room 204, staff found temporary offices in Circulation and room 204 as well as other study spaces throughout the building.

Everyone made the best of the situation and made it a fun and productive day at ZSR!

Lauren Pressley and I led six workshops over three consecutive days this week on web 2.0 topics. These sessions came out of discussions with various members of the campus community who expressed an interest in learning more about everything from social networking applications to creating a podcast. The six workshops were:

1. An Introduction to Web 2.0
2. Social Networking Applications (Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, LinkedIn)
3. Google for Collaboration,
4. Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasting at ZSR
5. Using Web 2.0 Content
6. Web 2.0 and Instructional Design

Each session was 90 minutes in length, offering an opportunity to expand beyond the standard lecture format and include more active learning exercises in each session. In the Social Networking Applications workshop I led, the class was given basic instruction on the various applications, then broken into groups that explored a particular application. After exploring that application for 45 minutes the groups gave presentations to the class on that particular social networking application. This gave everyone the chance to explore the application of their choice while still learning about the other applications from the group presentations. The participants were nervous about this format at first, but adjusted quickly as the group began exploring the various applications. Lauren tried a similar model for her session on “Blogs, Wikis and Podcasting at ZSR”, allowing the participants to “play” in our sandbox environment after learning a bit about these tools. For the workshop on “Using Web 2.0 Content” we explored RSS feeds, iGoogle and the actual equipment (camcorders, audio recorders) used to create this content.

All in all it was a successful series of workshop, attended by a variety of staff and faculty. I enjoyed incorporating content from the “Teaching Teaching” workshops Lauren and Roz led in the Spring. We hope to repeat this series of workshops in the Fall semester.

In our last Speak Out gathering Lynn mentioned that she would like to bring back the “Did You Know” feature in the Library Gazette. I have been married for 8 years and have 3 daughters.

I lived in Cleveland, OH for 2 years and then in Boston, MA for 5 years before returning to NC.

I studied Hebrew, Talmud and Torah at the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies and also Kabbalah at Aish HaTorah in Cleveland, OH for 2 years.

I like mountain hiking.

I drive a black Ford Taurus nicknamed Nellie Bell.

I am a social butterfly who enjoys conversation.

The ZSR Zephyrs (or “Zephs”, since it has a little more attitude) played to a 2 Win, 1 Loss series today in Reynolds Gym, kicking of the Summer Olympics in fine style. The “A” team today consisted of Travis and Prentice, with Craig and Mary Beth acting as cleanup.

The first round was played against “The Committee” from Admissions. While their name would make them seem mild mannered, they schooled the Zefs in a 16-11 loss. The “B” team were handed a 2 point lead by Travis and Prentis before they approached the table for their half, but Craig and MB couldn’t carry the victory off. “The Committee” quickly found and exploited the weakness in the team, (AKA Mary Beth). MB realized she was going to have to settle down to keep the ball on the table.

Round two, played against the Stage Muthas (Theater/Dance) went better, and was closely played between the two teams. The final score was 17-15. Prentice and Travis again gave the Zephs a lead, and Craig and Mary Beth nearly managed to lose it when the opposing team won several unanswered points in the half. Craig and MB rallied late and took the team from a score of 11-15, to 17-15 to win game two.

The last round was played against the “Exhibitionists” from Reynolda House. Drunk on their previous victory, the Zephs hit their stride by the third game and finished off the opponents with a 16-7 victory. Well deserved high fives were given all around.

Next week…FRISBEE GOLF!

On Monday, June 8th, the Access Services Team took a day long retreat. We needed and wanted to stick close to the library, and since we have such great study rooms now in the library, we used the study room on the west side of the building, (near the Graduate Student Lounge) as our home base for the day. We started with the early risers taking a trip to Krankies downtown for some coffee and treats to get our engines going.

We returned to ZSR and met the rest of the team for our meeting in 232. The goal of the day was to do a SWOT analysis (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) for each Access “division” and we brainstormed in big and small groups about each of these divisions: ILL, Reserves/Ereserves, Circulation, Stacks, Facilities, Media and Document Delivery. We willl utilize that information to set goals for the coming year. Another goal of the day was to write a Mission Statement for the team.

After working until noon, we went to the Deacon Grille for lunch, and then took a tour of the Deacon Tower. Lunch was delicious, (and pretty reasonable.)

Then after a tour of the Tower,

we returned to ZSR for an afternoon session to further our SWOT analysis.

The day ended at 4pm with the team revved up and ready to tackle the challenges ahead.

It was exhausting, but we discovered a great deal about each others concerns and challenges. We didn’t finish the Access Mission statement, and have a little more analysis on the SWOT charts to do, but we’ll be completing it all in the next few weeks. We know good things will result from all of this work. We appreciated being given the chance to have a day like this, (Thanks to Lynn!) and we also thank our great students who managed to problem solve sufficiently that they didn’t even need to use the emergency cell phone once!

A year ago, Steve Cramer initiated a get together of UNCG and WFU library staff to talk about reference technology. We had a great time visiting our colleagues, talking about common issues, and brainstorming about the future of our distinct part of the field.

Yesterday, we met for a second time. A similar group from UNCG came to visit, and we broadened the group to include NCSU. It was a great time! We met in Starbucks from 10-12:30, had lunch at Shorty’s, and gave the NCSU folks a short tour before they went on their way.

Roz, Giz, Sarah, Mary, Kaeley, Bobbie, Kevin, and I participated from ZSR, and we had nine visitors from the other schools. We talked a bit about how our different institutions are organized, discussed current tools that have potential for instructional work, talked about current projects, and where our work was headed. It’s really energizing to connect with others doing similar things and to see how we’re approaching the same issues from our different institutional perspectives. NCSU was interested in hosting a get together in the fall, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again!

With a lump in my throat, I must report that Renate has retired from the University. Her last day at work was Friday. She has been planning this for a while, but blood-swore us to absolute secrecy until she was gone. She specifically would not allow any kind of party or celebration of her many years of service. She was hired in September 1966 as a part-time library assistant in the cataloging department. Over the years, she was both part-time and full-time and even took a 6 year break from 1975 to 1981. Through it all, she epitomized the mission of the Z Smith Reynolds Library: to help our faculty and students succeed.

I only knew her for five years, but she made a definite impression on me as a new Director. She took my modest idea of keeping the library open 24 hours during exam week and turned it into the Wake the Library extravaganza that we now know and love. It was her idea to go out and raise money to serve food to the students and she did it with style. She was also the first chair of the Marketing Committee to invent the Library Lecture Series. She called in favors from a number of faculty to come and speak in the library and set the precedent for our current, highly successful events. These are only two of her many, many contributions to ZSR. She was the face of the Library to several generations of Wake Forest faculty, staff and students. I invite others to give their remembrances and tributes to the incomparable Renate!
