During January 2009...

A TLC Workshop

Saturday, January 31, 2009 6:55 pm

After midwinter, I came back to a busy week of teaching. But the presentation that I was focused on the most was for the Teaching and Learning Center. It was the first presentation that I have done with them, and we had 27 people signed up to attend! The group was fairly chatty, so instead of a presentation I facilitated a discussion. In case anyone is interested, here are the materials I created for the session:

It was a fun time, and a nice opportunity to collaborate with the TLC. If you have syllabi questions, please let me know! :)

Korean Film Series sponsored by the Museum of Anthropology

Friday, January 30, 2009 10:55 am

This semester, the Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University is sponsoring the Korean Film Series at the Reynolda House on Thursday evenings in January and February in conjunction with the exhibit, “Korean Funerary Figures: Companions for the Journey to the Other World.” Last evening, I served as commentator of the film Never Forever, which was directed by Gina Kim. Specifically, I discussed the film’s theme of the relationship between the 1st generation Korean parents and second generation Korean-American son as it relates to my personal experiences as a second generation Korean-American. More information on the Korean Film Series and events on Korean culture are available at http://www.wfu.edu/moa/events.html.

Some Rights Reserved: ZSR’s Flickr Site and Creative Commons

Friday, January 23, 2009 10:46 am

With the approval of Admin Council, I have added a Creative Commons license to most of our Flickr pictures. What’s does that mean? Well, if you’ve ever noticed the awesome photography in any of Lauren P.’s presentations recently, then you’ve already seen one of the benefits. Creative Commons allows us to tell potential users in advance that it’s OK to use one of our pictures, e.g. in a PowerPoint, provided that

  • it’s not for commercial purposes
  • they attribute the photo to ZSR
  • the work they create (the PowerPoint show) is also distributed under the same terms, aka “share-alike.”

The exception is our READ posters. We have contractual restrictions that prohibit us from sharing these photos with a Creative Commons license. Therefore, those 5 images still say “all rights reserved.”

Hopefully this move will provide more exposure for ZSR as well as help to advance the conversation about copyright and open access in today’s information universe.

Dedicated Deacon

ILL really appreciates all the help that Erik has provided. He recently fixed our "Return" labels and our copier/scanner issue, so the students don't have to hit ok for each single page. That's gonna save us quite a bit of time. Don't know how he did it. But we are happy he did it. Colleen, Ellen and Cristina (along with all the ILL students)

ZSR Zephyrs Celebrate Last Summer’s Accomplishments

Friday, January 16, 2009 7:21 pm

On one of the coldest days in recent years, the ZSR Zephyrs gathered to celebrate our 2nd place finish in last summer’s staff Olympics. Our prize was a $50 gift certificate to Chipotle’s and it languished in my desk drawer for months. But, when everyone remembered it, we quickly set a time for a “reunion” over burritos! Team members Erik, Roz, Heather, Mary Beth, Carolyn, Prentice and Susan chowed down and decided this was our first 2009 season training session!

Teaching Teaching (or Learning Teaching, or something like that)

Friday, January 16, 2009 4:09 pm

Today was the first Teaching Teaching class. (For those who are curious, Roz and I had a Google Doc that was punnily named “teaching teaching” since that’s what we were planning… the name stuck.)

Over the course of the spring semester Roz and I are planning to give a one hour “course” on teaching. I’m really excited about this for a number of reasons, one of which is that it is open to all WFU librarians. Today we had two guests, which was really nice. The course is made to be modular, so you can miss some or attend based on topic. There are no readings, assignments, homework, or quizzing. We’re hoping that the “course” is long enough to allow us to present with some depth, without requiring too much time commitment from attendees.

Here is the presentation from today:

& you can find more in the blog. If you’re interested in the individual class sessions, you can see the calendar here. If you’re interested in the topic or the class, feel free to talk with Roz or me, or just sign up for the class!

Recycle Batteries@ZSR

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 3:54 pm

As many of you may recall, the ZSR Library has been recycling batteries at the ITC desk for years. This began back in the days of the old Palm PDAs that ran off of copious amounts of AAA batteries. Back then, Ellen Knott and I would make a trip every semester to 3RC the Envirostation in Winston-Salem. Two years ago, when the University made a recycling video, the ITC desk was featured as a battery drop-off location. As staff and student usage of this service has increased, so have our trips to 3RC. We now go twice a semester! Now, thanks to Craig’s excellent signmaking skills, we’ve added a prominent sign to the drop-off box in ITC. So remember, bring your batteries to the ITC desk to be recycled!

ZSR print and copy goes MFD (multi-function)

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 8:51 pm

Today the ZSR library migrated from our old photocopier and pay-for print systems to a brand-spanking-new integrated system. This project entailed the installation of new Multi-function devices (MFD) for both the Z. Smith Reynolds and Professional Center libraries and was part of the campus wide implementation of new copiers.

Some of the great new features of the new copy/print system include:

  • Copy/print availability throughout the library
  • Color copying/printing available in the Information Technology Center
  • Improved Cash add system
  • Deacon Dollar integration

Although the old system has been removed, students can still use the balance that they have on their cards (the vending stripe) on one of two old copiers in the building or in one of the vending machines around campus.

Lots of work went into making this project successful including the efforts of our vendors, folks from Information Systems, the Professional Center Library, and of course of our ZSR Library Staff. Many thanks to Susan for sticking around to install printing clients! If you have any questions about how the system works please feel free to get in touch with Erik.
