During June 2008...

Summer Olympics Update

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 2:21 pm by Susan

Today the Zephyrs fielded an inner tube water polo team. Roz, Susan, Mary Beth and Carolyn took to the pool against the Dukes of Hazardous Waste (Residence Life and Housing). We played hard and Mary Beth took a kick to the nose. Our opponents had two really big guys that were hard to deal with, but we managed to lose by just one point, 4-3. We all had great fun splashing, paddling and dumping people out of their tubes!

I’d like to recognize Caroline for the work she has done over the past semester on special multimedia projects: First for her leadership on the project to create a DVD for the Darryl Hunt Foundation - It has been a complex project and Caroline has taken charge so that it has been successful. And more recently, she has worked with Dr. Smith to digitize interviews for a pilot project he is doing. These types of projects are beyond the normal scope of ITC daily activities. Thanks, Caroline!

MedCat at WFU

Thursday, June 19, 2008 3:37 pm by Giz

This week, forty high school students from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians attended the MedCat program at Wake Forest University. MedCat stands for Medical Careers and Technology. The program was led by Professor Ulrike Wiethaus and partners Wake Forest University with the School of Medicine to teach these students about careers in the medical field. Its purpose is to give these students a taste of college life and encourage them to attend college while keeping them connected to their traditions and culture.

The students arrived in Winston-Salem on Sunday, and on Monday morning I did a clicker survey of their technology skills and they toured the campus. That afternoon, they began a Problem Based Learning (PBL) exercise related to the medical field. Later that afternoon, Sharon Snow led a Bibliographic Instruction session for the group and they continued working on their PBL projects until Wednesday morning when they gave presentations to the group. Originally Mary Scanlon was slated to work with this group, but dates changed and conflicted with her trip to Venice. All the preparations Mary made in advance made my job and Sharon’s job much easier. After their four-day visit to Wake Forest, these students were off to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and North Caroline State University. I hope to see some of them in our freshman class in a few years!

ZSR Zephyrs Return to WFU 2008 Summer Olympics!

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 4:17 pm by Susan

After a year’s hiatus (to allow other teams a chance to win), the ZSR Zephyrs have returned the the WFU Staff Summer Olympics this season!

This year’s roster is comprised of Heather Gillette, Prentice Armstrong (team veteran), Roz Tedford, Erik Mitchell (team veteran), Mary Beth Lock, Carolyn McCallum and Susan Smith (team veteran).

There will be 8 weekly competitive events, ranging from today’s Bocce Ball toss to Inner Tube Water Polo. Points are earned by winning, placing or just participating in these events, in addition to earning daily points for exercise and class participation.

We would love to have any interested ZSR’ers come out on Wednesdays and cheer us on!

Teams Info and Tech Become “Research, Instruction & Technology Services”

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 9:30 am by Susan

Effective June 1, Research and Information Services (aka Team Info) and Information Technology (aka Tech Team) merged into a new team. As Lynn conveyed in her lib-l announcement to the staff, this merger will help optimize our ability to accomplish the library’s strategic goals.

Our first retreat took place on Monday, June 9. Over the 3 hour period, we explored many avenues for making an effective transition. Of course, one of the first orders of business was to decide on a new team name.

“Research, Instruction & Technology Services” describes the major functional responsibilities for the team. There are many intersections of these three important services that are already taking place in what team members accomplish. By highlighting them in the new team name, we hope to emphasize the areas of synergy that our new team will bring to the library’s mission.

In keeping with the library field’s affection for acronyms, we also considered how the new name would be abbreviated. So, feel free to refer to us as “RITS”!

ZSR Host TIP Students

Friday, June 6, 2008 1:22 pm by Giz

On Friday, June 6th 250 students receiving recognition for their outstanding Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) plus their families were on the campus of Wake Forest University to go on campus tours and attend various sessions. The ZSR Library hosted two such sessions, one entitled “In the Know: Rare Books and Archives” and one entitled “Information Technology at WFU.” These sessions were held at 11am and repeated at 12:45pm, each lasting 45 minutes. Megan Mulder led the session in Rare Books and Tim Mitchell escorted the student and parents from the Benson/Tribble patio to Rare Books.

Giz, Caroline, Erik and Barry Davis (our former student and summer replacement for Caroline) escorted their students and parents from the Benson/Tribble patio to room 204 and led the “Information Technology at WFU” session, offering students a taste of Lib100 and clickers, talking about technology, and asking questions about intellectual property, copyright and plagiarism during the 45 minute session. All together there were more than 100 people in the four sessions. Thanks to everyone who made this a successful event!
