During January 2008...

Cintas Security Containers

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 3:24 pm

Ever wonder what happens to the papers we place in the Cintas Security containers conveniently located on levels 2 (behind Circulation), 4 (in the Reference workroom), and 8 (in room 802)? Well today while walking in to the Library I happened to see the Cintas truck getting ready to load and shred the contents of our bins! I pulled out my trusty cell phone and took a picture.

As you can see from the photo, the Cintas Security containers are emptied into a large rolling bin that attaches to the side of the truck and is lifted up and dumped into the truck. The screen by the operator allows people to see the contents of the bins being shredded as they enter!

Cintas Truck Shredding Papers from ZSR

MLK-ZSR connection

Saturday, January 26, 2008 1:10 pm

From the Director:

Many of you know by now that I have a deep and abiding love and respect for all things related to the good Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In the last three years, I have tried to encourage meaningful programming at ZSR to honor his legacy and help fulfill his dream. The first year we had Micah Andrews read the famous “I Have a Dream” speech in our beautiful atrium.

The next year, Micah wrote his own call-to-action speech entitled, “What’s Going On?”

This year, ZSR sponsored the showing of the film “I Am Not My Brother’s Keeper”produced by Wake Forest faculty member Mary Dalton, describing the lunch counter sit-in by Winston Salem State and Wake Forest students in 1960.

The film tied in to the joint WSSU-WFU celebration of the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, January 21, which had many ZSR ties as well. Microtext and ITC student Benny Cooper, who also participated in the South Course last summer, won the student prize for the annual Building the Dream award. Dr. Angela Hattery, faculty member and creator of the South Course trip, won the faculty “Building the Dream” award. Attending the luncheon at WSSU to celebrate the awards were Lynn Sutton, Wanda Brown, Chris Burris and Doris Jones. Later that night Lynn, Chris and Mary Beth Lock attended the MLK program featuring an inspirational speech by LeVar Burton (of Roots, Reading Rainbow and Star Trek fame) and an outstanding spoken word performance by WFU graduate Tyrell Dozier and his little brother. Jessica Armstrong (Circulation student and daughter of our own Prentice) sang in the gospel choir. Craig Fansler did his usual magic with exhibits, producing one on Dr. King and one on LeVar Burton:

Next year we will continue to do our part to raise awareness until the whole campus is truly involved and takes ownership in the MLK holiday that affects us all. Or as Dr. King said,

Get Game@ZSR

Friday, January 25, 2008 10:26 pm

The Library hosted the semi-annual Get Game@ZSR Friday, January 25th from 7-11pm. This installment of Get Game was both an open game night and a Halo 3 tournament. Lynn Sutton, Susan Smith, Erik Mitchell, Tim Mitchell, Kevin Gilbertson, and Caroline Numbers (along with two very dedicated RTAs and John Vientos from Information Systems) were all on hand to help Get Game’s fearless leader, Giz Womack. Along with flyers and posters hung up all over campus, the Library received a tremendous mention on The Student: Get Game @ ZSR! 40 people played and/or stopped by during the night. Due to technical issues at UNC-Greensboro, a tournament between the schools was not possible. However the WFU tournament was held.

The festivities ended when we awarded our trophy to two students, Joel Ernst and Peter Jin pictured above, who proved that they were truly Halo 3 masters.

ZSR Staff Tour 88.5 WFDD

Thursday, January 24, 2008 7:04 pm

As a Staff Development activity, on Thursday, January 24th, Chris Burris, Joe Harrington, Mary Horton, Mary Beth Lock, Lauren Pressley, Lynn Sutton, and I went on a tour of 88.5 WFDD. Greg Keener, Membership Operations Coordinator for the station, was kind enough to volunteer to show us all around.

The station is located inside a renovated house so the interior is rather crowded in some areas, but everything was well laid out and professional looking. WFDD is staffed by 12 members and has three studios. The station also has three bandwidths on HD Radio: WFDD 1 which plays the regular WFDD format, WFDD 2 plays classical and opera music, and WFDD 3 (which is scheduled to launch in February) plays an eclectic blend of music ranging from bluegrass to ambient.

We sat in one of the conference rooms and Greg shared some interesting facts about the station:

1946: WFDD was “born” as a 5 watt station on the campus of Wake Forest College

1948: Officially accepted by the FCC. Thus, this is the year they consider to be their radio debut. The goal for the first pledge drive of that year was $200!

1967: Became the first non-commercial FM station in Winston-Salem

1971: Charter member of NPR (yes, even before WUNC!)

1989: Hurricane Hugo caused the radio tower to collapse

1991: Moved into current location. Prior to that they were located in Reynolda Hall

After Greg fielded some questions from all of us, we went into a studio with one of the Producers and Hosts of WFDD programming, Bradley George. We were able to watch him push some buttons and announce on-air traffic and weather. He also took a few questions from us. It was very brief, but very interesting.

Our time at WFDD was very pleasant and informative. Greg was also kind enough to send us all off with an 88.5 WFDD flower pot coffee mug. WFDD will be having their Winter fundraiser during the week of February 8th-13th. Tune in and give if you can!

An Introduction to Zotero

Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:39 pm

On Tuesday, Dan Johnson, graduate student and new father, took time from his busy schedule to teach a Zotero workshop for the ZSR staff. Dan is such a fan of this product that he volunteered for this assignment! Having ditched EndNote, Dan uses Zotero exclusively to manage his thesis citations.

A Firefox extension, Zotero is available for download from www.zotero.org. Dan began the class by having the participant download and install this useful plug-in to our web browser. Next, we learned the core features of this product, using it to create entries for a variety of source types from library catalogs to databases. We even learned how to attach PDF files and screen shots of the articles into Zotero.

Dan did an amazing job covering this extensive amount of material in a 60 minute session. For those who missed the class, the Zotero website has excellent tutorials and other support resources for new users! I encourage anyone who uses EndNote to give Zotero a try, who knows, you may decide this web based product meets your citation needs!

ITC Equipment: Policy Change

Sunday, January 20, 2008 9:20 pm

For the first time in ITC history, we have instituted a fine structure to encourage our student patrons to return cameras, camcorders and projectors on time. We have offered loans on digital equipment and accessories for many years, but are limited by budget on the number of items we can buy. We depend on our users to return borrowed equipment on time so that it is available for others to check out. Unfortunately, some students don’t appreciate the dilemma and often keep the equipment far over the due date.

After attempting other methods to persuade users to be timely, we have decided that it is time to use a fine system to promote on-time returns. This policy will apply to undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty and staff will not be charged fines because, traditionally, they are conscientious about meeting due dates for equipment.

The 3 day loan period with no renewal will stay in effect. When a user checks out a piece of equipment or accessory item, a customer checkout receipt will be generated that shows the due date. A hard copy notice explaining the new policy will be included with each item. A day before it is due, a courtesy reminder will be emailed to the user. Once it is overdue, the fine will accrue on a daily basis for a two week period. Overdue notices showing the accrued charge will be sent daily. After two weeks, it will be declared lost and a lost fee will incur. If the student returns the item at that time, the lost charge will be forgiven, but the fine is still owed.

The fine/lost fee schedule is:

Camera: Fine of $5.00/day overdue; $150 lost/replacement fee

Camcorder: Fine of $5.00/day overdue; $500 lost/replacement fee

Projector: Fine of $10.00/day overdue; $800 lost/replacement fee

Accessories: Fine of $1.00/day overdue; $50 lost/replacement fee
(cords and cables, power supplies, projector screens, tripods, headphones)

Proceeds from collected fines will be used to increase the equipment loaner pool.
