Get Game @ ZSR-The Fifth Time is the Charm

Monday, September 24, 2007 3:44 pm

On Friday, September 21st from 7-11pm, the Z. Smith Reynolds Library hosted its fifth Get Game@ZSR event. This open video game night drew a good crowd of 32 students, along with five University staff and guests.

Once again, we held the event in the atrium. We had five screens and projectors in the atrium, one projector in the ITC Lobby and one in the ITC Multimedia Lab for a total of 7 screens, our biggest event to date, and for much of the evening, all 7 stations were in use! We had three Nintendo Wii consoles, two Guitar Hero stations, and an N64 and Gamecube station! We also had remote control cars and some other games to keep everyone entertained throughout the evening!

I want to thank everyone who helped set up for this event! Chris, Prentice, and Craig along with the RTAs, were instrumental in setup for the event! Caroline, Susan, and Tim got all the players signed in as they arrived and worked “security” at the front desk. Lynn joined us for the start of the evening to make sure we had everything we needed. Susan took some excellent photos and posted them on Flickr! There was an ample supply of pizza purchased and it was gone in the first hour! Sodas and candy fueled the gamers (and the staff) through the rest of the evening! At 11pm, after a great evening of gaming, we waved goodbye to the gamers and by 11:15pm the RTAs and members of the ZSR staff had everything broken down, packed up and were headed to the parking lot!

We have already begun planning our next event in Spring 2008, another tournament like the one held in Spring 2006, this time in conjunction with another school! We have to keep these events fresh and new in order to keep students interested in attending!

Staff Development Talk: Organic Farming Can Feed the World

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 10:04 pm

On Tuesday, September 17th, Mike Causey, an organic farmer with Lodge Dodge Farm, spoke to several staff members of the library about organic farming as sustainable agriculture. The talk was hosted by the Staff Development Committee.

Mr. Causey discussed how he came to be an organic farmer and about the products that he grows and sells at the Greensboro Farmer’s Curb Market. He also discussed the requirements for food to be qualified as “organic.” As some of you might already know, it is food that is grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, growth hormones, or genetic modification.

At the end of his talk, Mr. Causey showed us some of the organic products that he sells at the Curb Market such as yams, figs, and pepper jelly. He even brought several purple potatoes for us all to take home!

Technology@WFU 2007

Wednesday, September 5, 2007 3:23 pm

Early on Saturday, August 25th, members of the ZSR staff, along with the ITGs, RTAs, and some members of the IS staff, all met in Brendle Recital Hall for the third annual Technology@WFU.

Since 2005, when “ThinkPad Orientation” morphed into “Technology@WFU” in order to better meet the needs of a freshman orientation schedule that had be shortened by one day, we’ve been meeting with 500+ students at a time in two sections in Brendle Recital Hall. Half the students come from 9am-10:15am and then the other half attends from 10:45am to 12noon. This year we had 1059 students attend (a 94% attendance rate!)

We covered a wide range of topics, including “Care of the ThinkPad,” “Computing on a Campus Network” and “Classroom Computer Etiquette.” We had ITGs, RTAs and IS staff all volunteer to present on stage with me and Caroline.

This year we incorporated “clicker” questions into the event and gave out the Library’s 60 clickers. Students passed the clicker along their row, giving everyone a chance to answer at least one question. While the clickers were successful, I think it would have been more successful if every student had been able to answer each question.

This Fall and Spring we will be reviewing this year’s program and looking for more ways to streamline this process! Thanks to Lynn Sutton, Susan Smith, Kevin Gilbertson, Tim Mitchell, Craig Fansler, Kaeley McMahon, Lauren Pressley, and Carolyn McCallum for volunteering this year! Caroline and I appreciate all the assistance with this project from the members of the ZSR staff! Special thanks to Susan Smith for being the group photographer this year!
