Future Technology

RE: Microsoft Surface

This techonology is absolutely absurd. I would have never thought that something like this would be possible. It’s nothing short of incredible that we may be able to go to a restaurant, sit down, order from a menu, split a check, and even share pictures and other information right at the table without the assistance of a waiter. I really think that this is the technology of the future and it will become much more prevalent as we progress into the next decade.

Elevator to Space

This idea of a elevator to space just seems ridiculous at first glance, because let’s be honest, who ever thought that this would be a legitimate possibility? Once I read the article, I realized that scientists really believe that the elevator is possible and on top of that they believe that in the future it will exist. If this is true, I have no idea what else to expect in terms of technology. If there can be an elevator to space, then I will not count anything out of the realm of possibility.

I cannot imagine what things would be like if there was an elevator that could take me to space. Something that has always just been “out there” could potentially become accessible. The elevator would be massive and it would look kind of funny just seeing a tube extending up into the sky, but it would be one of the coolest things most people have ever seen. I can only hope that I will be around to see this elevator to space built and used.

Microsoft Surface

The Microsoft Surface is amazing. I have seen a few videos on it and I cannot believe that this technology is real. The possibility is not very far off either. The surface is ready and can be used, the only issue with it right now is that it costs a lot. It would be amazing to go into a store or restaurant and customize something or order dinner simply on a touch screen table. To go along with that, the ability it has to sync up with phones is also incredible. It combines so many different types of technology and I can’t really believe it.

I’m pretty sure that the surface or something similar is used in the most recent James Bond movie. There are many times where missions are discussed and a large touch sensor table is used.

If the Microsoft Surface becomes widespread, the way we are used to dining and shopping will change. All of the possibilities will be at our fingertips.

Just wanted to check out what Kevin brought up during our presentation - check out this YouTube video that shows a little demo of Microsoft Surface. SOOO COOOOL. Unfortunately the link tool is not working on the blog, so just copy and paste the following URL:

Re: Technology in Sports

I have heard of this idea of using technology to almost replace the human element in a sporting event. The idea of using lasers to mark first downs in football would be a good idea because it would cut down on controversy in situations where the spot of the ball is in question. If lasers were used, then there would not really be an issue with where the referees think the ball should be spotted because the lasers would confirm the spot. Some people may be against the idea because they appreciate the human element in sports, but in the long run it would help the game because it would cut down on controversy.

Soccer has also been experimenting with lasers. They have been trying to put a chip in a soccer ball that would trip a laser on the goal line so that the officials would know that the ball went across the goal line. There are many instances in soccer where a goal or a save is in question because the officials could not see whether or not the entire ball crossed the line. The laser solves this problem because it would signal if the ball crossed the line.

The idea of incorporating technology into sports is a good idea and I think it needs to be explored because there are too many times where a game is decided by a matter of inches, which if the officials would have had some help from lasers or similar technology, they may have made the right call.

Ok- so this is exactly why I love our topic. What a ridiculous idea this is! In a good way of course. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been telling myself that one day I will be able to make it into space. It’s honestly been a secret goal of mine as I’ve been growing up and everytime a story comes out that says we are closer to allowing the average human being to travel into space, I get so pumped. This idea is brilliant - as far as negative aspects go, I could totally see why people would view this as a giant waste of money. Once we take this elevator up to space, what do we do? It has no purpose really than being used as a giant amusment ride. But I will gladly take this elevator up to space if they can create the carbon nanotube to hold the structure together. I really hope this is not a fluke and I’m excited to see what the next couple decades will bring us in regards to space exploration.

Elevator to…space???

This is quite an interesting read. The technology behind a future elevator that would take people from Earth to outer space is becoming more clear to researchers and scientists. They have determined that not only is the idea feasible, but at some point in the future it will be able to be implemented. What an incredible idea:

So what are your thoughts on this idea? Do you think it’s possible? Do you think this could get completed in our lifetime? Are there any negative outcomes that could arise as a result of this new and relatively unexplored technology?

This is an idea that I had heard being thrown around quite a while ago. It’s an extremely interesting concept that would not be difficult to accomplish but it would also change the game of football as we know it. If you are a football fan you know that the spot of the ball, as determined by the officiating crew, is crucial. You also know that it takes time for the crew to bring out the “measuring sticks” or the “chains” to measure for a first down. If this proposed technology became a reality, the game would move faster because the electronic first down marker would eliminate the need of that “chain gang.”

However, is such a change good for the game of football? Yes, it would speed up the game and there are no foreseeable problems to be encountered with the implementation of this system, but it would also be changing an aspect of football that has been around for quite a long time. Those opposed to this system would most likely argue that it changes the game of football, a game that is perfect just the way it is.

Nonetheless, not only do I believe that this is a great idea, but I can also see this becoming a reality in the not-so-distant future. Most of the teams in the NFL have gone to field turf, an artificial field that replaces natural grass. Not only is it easy to maintain, but it also allows for a scenario such as this one to come into play. An electronic light would highlight where a team needs to get for a first down right on the field itself, much like the line that networks put on the screen during live telecasts. It will be extremely interesting to see if this proposed technology is implemented into the game of football and used in football stadiums nationwide in the near future.

Epic 2014

I was amazed by this video. It is kind of mind boggling to think that two massive internet sites could merge. I think if that happened, Goolezon would basically own all of the internet. It is also interesting to think what would happen if one company had a monopoly on the internet. It could change what is and is not allowed on the internet. Also as noted in the previous post, what if AT&T merged with Verizon and had a monopoly on the cellular world. It would have an impact almost as big as Googlezon. One massive company having a monopoly on something that is used by virtually everyone with access to could either be a great thing or it could be terrible depending on what the major company decided to do with it.

With this being said, the likelihood of this merger ever happening is very low. It is very interesting to think about though what could happen if the merger did occur.
