Religious Intolerance Exhibit

To create the Religious Intolerance project, Dr. Neal received a grant from the Chambers Family Fund for Entrepreneurship and a grant from the Wake Forest University Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts.The class, which met Spring Semester, 2008, is working on a project entitled: “Portraits of Hate, Lessons of Hope:Examining Religious Intolerance in America.”I met with students in Dr. Neal’s class to develop library exhibits.The exhibits in the library will contain images of religious hatred along with some historical context and analysis to begin a dialogue about this issue.Six students in Dr. Neal’s class worked with Craig Fansler in the ZSR Library to put the exhibit together.The exhibit was installed August 25th after the construction in the library entrance was completed.

North American Wild Flowers exhibit

North American Wild Flowers exhibitPaintings of wild flowers made by Mary V. Walcott in 1925.

The book, North American Wild Flowers, printed by the Smithsonian Institution in 1925, contains paintings made by Mary Vaux Walcott. These paintings are life-size and are housed in Rare Books in a 5-volume folio.

Earth Day is April 22, 2008. An exhibit was created to feature books and DVD’s in the ZSR Library collection.

Black History Month exhibit

Black History Month exhibitFor Black History Month, one part of the exhibit holds books from the library collection on the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement.

For Black History Month, the exhibit focuses on literature about the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement and the 1960 Sit-ins in Winston-Salem. During these Sit-ins, 12 students from Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State were arrested. A historical marker in downtown Winston-Salem marks the location of the event.

LeVar Burton exhibit

LeVar Burton, actor and activist, will give a presentation at Wait Chapel on Wake Forest University January 21, 2008. Burton is well known for his role as Kunta Kinte in the 1977 series Roots. He also acted a prominent role in Star Trek-The Next Generation and the PBS series, Reading Rainbow. Burton will give a presentation entitled: “On Common Ground”.
